After-School Programs

After-School Partnerships

YES engages three Strategic Partners in the spring and in the fall to offer after school programs that meet once per week over a 4-6 week period. These trips are an intensive introduction for up to 10 students to rock climbing (indoor & outdoor), fly fishing, or skateboarding. Transportation is provided for each trip. Details on the three after-school options are outlined below:

  • City Ascent – rock climbing program for youth in 6-12th grade. Features trips indoor to Rock Spot South Boston and outdoors to Quincy Quarries and Hammond Pond. Youth will be taught basic climbing skills, belay skills, and will learn to rappel.
  • Trout Unlimited – fly fishing program for youth in 6-12th grade. Features trips to either the Charles River, Jamaica Pond, Houghton’s Pond, or Ponkapoag Pond (dependant upon proximity). Each participant will learn from Greater Boston Trout Unlimited volunteers how to cast a fly rod and will be presented with a lesson on fly tying and conservation.
  • Skating 4 Good – skateboarding program for youth in 6-12th grade. Features on-location flat land training through a partnership with SkateCatalyst as well as a culminating Saturday trip to do conservation work on the Charles River with the Charles River Conservancy followed by a tour of the Lynch Family Skatepark in East Cambridge. Participants who meet requirements will receive a new skateboard and helmet at the end of the program.
